ZOOM EVENT REVIEWS
The California Jazz Foundation
The California Jazz Foundation presented APPLAUSE” -Celebrating Jazz and Mentoring! John Clayton has worn many “jazz hats” and is best known as a bassist and co-bandleader of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Additionally, as an educator he has mentored many young players, including bassist/singer Katie Thiroux and pianist/composer Sam Hirsh.
The musicians played at Clayton’s house for the gig and got down to business after Michael Dolphin one of CJF’s Board of Directors, acting as the concert emcee introduced them. Thiroux and Hirsh played together first, working off of the theme “Songs With Lines.” Sentimental “Just Friends” featured the bassist/singer delightfully playing and scatting, with the piano soaring.
A bluesy number (“Sam’s Line”) followed and was adorned with the players coolly interacting and soloing fervently. From a more conventional standpoint, Fats Navarro’s “Nostalgia” and Thad Jones’ “3 And 1” were selected for their theoretical and compositional aspects to maintain the general theme. Afterwards, Clayton joined Thiroux with Hirsh taking a break for “Deep Tones For Peace” that was garnished by her scatting and him bowing. Oscar Pettiford’s vintage “Tricotism” was showcased too and the grand finale including all of the musicians was bebop flavored gem “Line for Lines” by Gerry Mulligan.
For a different approach, Dolphin talked to Thiroux, Hirsh and Clayton after the music ended. Some of the topics were Hirsh working at the Slauson Learning Center in Inglewood for eight years and their upcoming projects. The pianist is working on a standards CD, Japanese tradition music and learning music software. Thiroux want to do something with the pianist, work on pop songs for jazz and continue her involvement with the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Women in Jazz Project. As expected, Clayton had a long list of endeavors. They included doing more bass instructional videos, symposiums, composing for the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, cooking and preparing for the CJF Gala in June. It coincidentally will honor MJF’s
Tim Jackson. For more info go to: https://californiajazzfoundation.org
Alan Broadbent and Georgia Mancio CD Launch
In keeping with the times, pianist/arranger/composer Alan Broadbent in the U.S. (Orange, NJ) and vocalist/lyrist/producer Georgia Mancio in the U.K. launched their new and second album together, Quiet is the Star. The recording sessions were finished in October 2019, but weren’t organized or mastered until 2020. With the worldwide lockdown in effect the project had more urgency, along with a songbook of their songs.
Understandably, they didn’t actually perform together, but instead shared how they worked together, especially during a pandemic. Each track was detailed and played with accompanying artful videos created by Simon Mannfield, who also did the album and associated book artwork. He joined in for a segment and said the music was “a light in the darkness.”
Mancio spoke more so in that regard and mentioned personal events, such as her mother passing away that influenced one of the songs, along with different themes and emotions. She detailed insights about inspirations and feelings connected with the ballad project. Additionally, the singer mentioned Broadbent conceiving the titles “that have a load of story already in them.”
Broadbent delved into the philosophical aspects and methodology, especially melody. He shared how the selections developed with one coming quickly and another happening slowly, sometimes taking years and waiting for the right moment or situation that would perfect. That was especially true for the title track that was influenced by Shakespeare and the pianist’s winter observations.
The singer and pianist during the chat portion of the event said the sessions were done in one day with a supporting drummer and bassist. They were both well prepared and only had minor issues to work out, and as true jazz musicians tried to stayed in the moment as much as possible. Broadbent was asked if he ever heard melodies in his dreams and replied that he often did, but when trying to play them the next day “they sound like crap.” Also asked was if they wrote together starting with the lyrics. There was only one song, which Mancio had written for her father and was derived from Joe Zawinul’s “Midnight Mood.” For more info go to: www.georgiamancio.com and www.alanbroadbent.com.

Van Gelder Studio, the legendary recording studio home to hundreds of jazz icons from John Coltrane to Herbie Hancock, has announced the launch of “Live from Van Gelder Studio,” a new virtual music series that will stream live from VanGelder.live.
Live from Van Gelder Studio is expected to continue through 2021 with a 10-show immersive and interactive program. The series will feature talent from original seminal recordings joined by multi-generational artists who will pay tribute to important records that were originally put to tape within the four walls of the studio. Tickets can be purchased directly on the site for $15. 2021 shows will be announced in the near future.
Performances will be live streamed using a new technology built from the ground up that is true to the Rudy Van Gelder sound. It will allow audiences to fully experience the unique studio and its sound in their homes. Upcoming experiences will be crafted to make the audience and musicians feel like they are at an actual live performance.
Live from Van Gelder Studio is created and produced by a team of jazz industry veterans including:
• Five-time Grammy Award-winner Don Sickler, who produced many Van Gelder-recorded artists including Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Cindy Blackman Santana.
• Phil Coady, producer of The Ultimate Blue Train, which was created while he was the lead producer in the Microsoft MS4Music Group and where he and Van Gelder first connected.
• Sam Kaufman, who as a talent agent worked with Van Gelder-recorded artists including Ray Charles, Pharoah Sanders and Jason Moran.
• Maureen Sickler, distinguished associate and long-time assistant engineer for Van Gelder, who now carries on the traditions forged in their 30+ year collaboration.

Save CATALINA JAZZ CLUB amid COVID-19!
In response to the citywide closures, the Catalina Jazz Club has set up this digital tip jar in a fight to survive. Their doors have been closed since March 14, 2020 and each day the fight grows harder to pay faithful staff, the talented tech crew and consummate chefs what they’re worth — which is everything. But there are some blues you just can’t sing away, so they humbly ask that you contribute whatever you can to help cover the rent of our Sunset hot spot and spare us from having to go dark for good. While great music can soothe the soul, it’s your gracious donation, no matter the size, that fills their heart.
Please contribute at GoFundMe.com/SaveCatalinaJazzClub
They’ll be sure to have your table ready.
All their love,
