The ever dynamic Chaka Khan The Queen of Funk, first gained fame as the lead singer for the San Diego-based rocking/funking group Rufus during the mid-70s. They produced a string of hits that melded the sounds Sly & Family Stone and Prince (she was even on his label for a couple of years). But Khan, originally from Chicago with roots in gospel, R&B and jazz eventually became too big a star after winning a Grammy and recording a string of top-selling hits the band. “Tell Me Something Good,” “Ain’t Nobody” and “I’m Every Woman” are three of her most popular songs recorded with Rufus.
As a solo artist Khan worked with a cornucopia of high-caliber musicians, such as Quincy Jones, Chicago, Joni Mitchell, Lenny White, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Clarke and even Chick Corea. As the mega singer’s career spiral upwards, she amassed a total of 10 Grammy’s, numerous nominations and many impressive awards. Among them were the SoulMusic Hall of Fame, UK Music Video Awards, Billboard Japan Music Awards and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Musical Excellence Award in 2023.
It’s not an exaggeration to call Khan an eternal superstar whose popularity spans generations. She returns to the Hollywood Bowl to performed her hot funk and rocking/soul jams with its orchestra conducted by Thomas Wilkins on July 26. Jamaican-born Grammy-nominated singer/saxophonist Masego will open with his unique progressive R&B sound.
