Gone Gone Beyond is a merging of folk, soul, roots, jazz and world music with a 21st century edge that incorporates electronica ambience and sound design touches. The band members, David Block (Los Angeles /NYC), Danny Musengo (Iowa/NYC), Kat Factor (Santa Cruz) and Mel Semé (Cuba/Barcelona) are all multi-instrumentalists/singer-songwriters.
Block’s Topanga Canyon home, above a creek with frogs croaking in the background, was utilized for The Lost Art of Listening – Garden Party Edition. Before things got underway the host mentioned that the act of recording was 142 years old, and prior to that people just played, sang or listened to others performing live. With that in mind, Block requested everyone turn off their phones, relax, not talk and just take in 2030, the group’s new and second full-length album.
Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, Semé was not able to be present for the occasion. From Portugal via Zoom he joined the group for a live rendition of arresting and soulfully sung acoustic guitar driven “By The Sea.” It was from their previous record Things Are Changing and totally astonished the audience.
In congress with the surroundings of Topanga Canyon and embodying the vibe of late ‘60s/early ‘70s gatherings, Block took the listeners into a relaxing meditative/yoga-like sequence before shifting to the new record. Its tunes were rootsy, atmospheric, easy flowing and drenched with rich vocal harmonies. Some were reminiscence of Seal, while others had qualities of Mumford & Sons with tangy banjo and violin accenting. Additionally, elements of gospel, country and alt-folk were included.
Following the listening, the musicians played songs not on the new release that were similar sounding. As a bonus, alto saxophonist Grace Kelly who was in attendance, pleasingly injected serenading choruses and solos for “Here For a Moment” and “Things Are Changing” to further delighted all in attendance. No Good Garden Sessions
Veteran keyboardist/composer/arranger/producer David Garfield always has several projects going and the pandemic barely slowed him down. His latest addition of the somewhat every two-month live Zoom concert series was CELBRATE JUNTEENTH with homage to Fathers Day as well, and picked up by viewers worldwide. The keyboardist recalled his first exposure to Junteenth during a tour with Freddie Hubbard, as the only white musician in the group, in Dallas, TX 1976, when the holiday was only celebrated in that state.
Featured musicians joining him were Bob Mintzer-reeds, Steve Ferrone-drums, Jimmy Earl-electric bass and Lilliana de los Reyes-vocals/percussion. Fittingly, hard-bop classic “Song For My Father” opened the session and was highlighted by Mintzer and Garfield exuberantly soloing. Coltrane’s immoral “Giant Step” was performed later and received similar treatment from the keyboardist and saxophonist.
The band continued with Garfield’s contemporary lightly funk flavored original “Desert Highway” bolstered by Mintzer. Steely Dan’s rock/contemporary mega hit “Aja” was sweetly garnished by de los Reyes’ vocals, with the other players intensely interacting. Somewhat related was Mintzer’s Yellowjacket’s thematic tune “Pass it On” composed by its founding member/keyboardist Russell Ferrante. Garfield notably injected a Latin-tinged version of the classic rock song “Layla.” He extensively wailed away, with bass and saxophone also contributing masterfully, along with Ferrone and de los Reyes getting into a percussion jam.
From a vastly different perspective was ethereal fusion gem “500 Miles,” adorned by de los Reyes enchanting vocals, Mintzer’s riveting sax, Earl’s pulsing bass and the bandleader’s expansive keyboard playing. Changing things up even more was Oletha Adams’ soulful pop ballad “Get Here” and Nora Jones’ mega hit “Don’t Know Why.”
Additionally, Aretha Franklin’s grooving “Rock Steady” and Patrice Rushen’s “Forget Me Nots” impressively showcased the vocalist’s funk and R&B chops as the other band members playfully cut loose. Concluding the Zoom gig was an Afro-Cuban interpretation of Minnie Riperton’s enduring R&B ballad “Lovin’ You” amazingly adorned by both serene singing and riveting playing. Van Gelder Studio, the legendary recording studio home to hundreds of jazz icons from John Coltrane to Herbie Hancock, has announced the launch of “Live from Van Gelder Studio,” a new virtual music series that will stream live from VanGelder.live.
Live from Van Gelder Studio is expected to continue through 2021 with a 10-show immersive and interactive program. The series will feature talent from original seminal recordings joined by multi-generational artists who will pay tribute to important records that were originally put to tape within the four walls of the studio. Tickets can be purchased directly on the site for $15. 2021 shows will be announced in the near future.
Performances will be live streamed using a new technology built from the ground up that is true to the Rudy Van Gelder sound. It will allow audiences to fully experience the unique studio and its sound in their homes. Upcoming experiences will be crafted to make the audience and musicians feel like they are at an actual live performance.
Live from Van Gelder Studio is created and produced by a team of jazz industry veterans including:
• Five-time Grammy Award-winner Don Sickler, who produced many Van Gelder-recorded artists including Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Cindy Blackman Santana.
• Phil Coady, producer of The Ultimate Blue Train, which was created while he was the lead producer in the Microsoft MS4Music Group and where he and Van Gelder first connected.
• Sam Kaufman, who as a talent agent worked with Van Gelder-recorded artists including Ray Charles, Pharoah Sanders and Jason Moran.
• Maureen Sickler, distinguished associate and long-time assistant engineer for Van Gelder, who now carries on the traditions forged in their 30+ year collaboration.

Victor Wooten Launches The Spirit of Music Book Club
Five-Night Virtual Event To Take In-Depth Look At Wooten’s Recently Released Groundbreaking Novel and Audiobook The Spirit of Music: The Lesson Continues
Over five consecutive Monday nights beginning June 28, Victor will cover 4 Measures (Chapters) from The Spirit of Music and feature special guests, including people who inspired the characters and/or who were the voices on the audiobook. Held in conjunction with Victor and Steve Bailey’s new website, thebassvault.com, this unique experience is the story brought to life. Register here.
The sequel to The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music (2006), The Spirit of Music is a fable-like story that follows three musicians from around the world who are mysteriously summoned to Nashville, the Music City, to join with Victor to do battle against the “Phasers,” whose blinking “music-canceling” headphones silence and destroy all musical sound. Only by coming together, connecting, and making the joyful sounds of immediate, “live” music can the world be restored to the power and spirit of music.
Normally held in-person at his namesake Wooten Center for Music and Nature in Tennessee, every month through September, Wooten will host monthly virtual programs. Now in its 22nd year, and virtual due to the pandemic, Vix camps teach not only music, but also theory, nature, and most importantly, the relationship between music and nature.

1000W is a multi-dimensional project that centers on 1000 ink washes, painted with Japanese Sumi ink and water on paper. They will be released in five series of 200. The first two hundred are available now. Each series will include a few curated groups. 1-200 features a group of four, two groups of twelve, and a group of thirty. A short digital film capturing the painting of each group will be included with the purchase. The films will be scored by jazz trumpeter Antoine Drye. Drye is a creative partner on the project, as the ink washes are created in conversation with improvisational jazz. The interaction between the painter and an assemblage of featured musicians, curated by and including Drye, will be featured in live performances of 1000W.
Footage of an overhead camera capturing the works as they are created will be projected for the artists and the audience to see. Each artist’s work informs the other. The music and the art are created in real-time, in the same moment. A film, produced and directed by Danny Clinch, will chronicle the entirety of the project. Clinch will draw from the overhead footage, live performances, and studio visits. In addition to the film, an album featuring the music produced in these sessions will be released at the conclusion of 1000W. 1000W seeks to raise $100,000 for the jazz community, which has been especially hard hit during the Covid pandemic with the prolonged closure of most live performance venues. $100 from the purchase of each painting will go directly to musicians in the jazz community. https://www.jimkempnerfineart.com/1000watts
