URBAN LEGENDS/UME RELEASES
FUNKY PRESIDENT

EPISODE TWO OF JAMES BROWN
MINI-DOCUMENTARY
Get Down, The Influence of James BROWN

Urban Legends, a division of UMe, Universal Music Group’s global catalog company, is continuing to spotlight one of the greatest artists of all-time, “The Godfather of Soul” James Brown, with the second installment of the animated mini-series Get Down, The Influence of James Brown.

James Brown’s official YouTube Channel will unveil Funky President, episode two of the new three-part series, following the first episode, Funky Drummer, released on July 10th. Narrated by Questlove (The Roots, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), and featuring Lord Finesse and Co-founder/former EIC of Wax Poetics Magazine, Andre Torres, the three-part series was created by UMe along with Dreambear and explores the sonic DNA of James Brown whose music is continually sampled and whose trademark vocal phrasing is deeply woven into the fabric of Hip-Hop.

This second episode explores the fascinating and unpredictable politics of James Brown while following the influence of his second most sampled track of all time, “Funky President (People It’s Bad).” Touching on the civil rights movement and Brown’s seminal “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud,” Funky President shows how James Brown, as well as his musical peers and successors, has been able to encourage social change and raise political concern from a black American perspective.

The full episode of Funky President premieres on September 1, 2020 and can be viewed here with part three (The Payback) coming later this year.

have an extensive selection of Video on Demand shows, and highlighting them is Jazz Musicians Unite against Racism on August 8. Artists such as Dwight Trible-vocals, John Beasley-keyboards, Bennie Maupin-reeds, Darek Oles-bass, Denny Janklow-reeds, Kamau Daaood-spoken word, Azar Lawrence-reeds and others contributed stellar sets. Additionally, some of them and several invited speakers spoke emotionally about social justice, racism and adhering to COVID-19 guidelines. The event was truly a sign of these tumultuous times that was definitely needed. Please support Leroy Downs and Fred Smith’s efforts to present unadulterated jazz to sophisticated and adventurous audiences. September 5th will be the second edition.

Save CATALINA JAZZ CLUB amid COVID-19!

In response to the citywide closures, the Catalina Jazz Club has set up this digital tip jar in our fight to survive. Their doors have been closed since March 14th, and each day the fight grows harder to pay faithful staff, the talented tech crew and consummate chefs what they’re worth — which is everything. But there are some blues you just can’t sing away, so they humbly ask that you contribute whatever you can to help cover the rent of our Sunset hot spot and spare us from having to go dark for good. While great music can soothe the soul, it’s your gracious donation, no matter the size, that fills their heart.
Please contribute at GoFundMe.com/SaveCatalinaJazzClub
They’ll be sure to have your table ready.

All their love,
Catalina, Manny, and the Staff

JAZZ COMPETETION

Deadline is September 8 at 5PM
“… rightfully one of the most anticipated events in jazz.”
– Christian McBride

The ninth annual Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition , also known as the “SASSY Awards,” gives outstanding jazz singers a chance to perform in front of celebrity judges for cash prizes and a platform for embarking on a career in the music business!

Held in honor of Newark’s “Divine One” – Sarah Vaughan – this exciting competition attracts gifted young talents from around the globe to perform in the finals on November 22 at NJPAC. Singers are evaluated by a panel of special guest judges and rated for vocal quality, musicality, technique, performance, individuality, artistic interpretation, and ability to swing.

“This esteemed event provides a platform for today’s outstanding jazz singers and gives audiences an early glimpse at tomorrow’s jazz stars,” writes Jazziz magazine.

Past winners have included Samara McLendon, Cyrille Aimée, Jazzmeia Horn, Laurin Talese and Quiana Lynell. This year’s event, which closes the 2020 TD James Moody Jazz Festival, will be hosted by WBGO-FM personality Gary Walker. Serving as judges are multi-GRAMMY™ winning bassist Christian McBride; acclaimed jazz vocalists Carmen Lundy and Vanessa Rubin; WBGO-FM president and CEO Robert G. Ottenhoff; and jazz producer Chuck Mitchell.
