REVIEW

Saxophonist Dave Koz and singer/keyboardist/guitarist Brian McKnight opened their special virtual Pre-Valentines (Feb 13) concert doing a duet of “My Funny Valentine” with the singer on piano. From there they quickly shifted with full band, Randy Jacobs-Music Director/guitar, Carmel-keyboards, Nathaniel Kearny Jr.-bass and Chad Wright-drums to the energetic tune “Love Changes Everything” from Koz’s 2003 Saxophonic album featuring super soulful singing and lively sax playing. Also from the same CD was funky instrumental “Honey-Dipped” featuring the bandleader and crew working out, along with jamming “Silverlining” recorded in 1993.

Koz’s classic “Together Again” was in the same mode, and included sax and drums intensely trading off to delight the virtual audience. The saxophonist, bandleader and impresario had to catch his breath after that interval. He continued with thematic ballad “Faces of The Heart” that was featured on the General Hospital soap opera and co-written with his brother Jeff.

Special guest singer Shelea joined the band and vibrantly sang Natalie Cole’s “This Will Be (an Everlasting Love)” that included guitar and sax solos. Koz congratulated her on recently getting married (12-31-20) and put her husband Phillip on the spot by inviting him on the stage to say hello. Afterwards, the singer preciously interpreted the Bergman’s enchanting ballad “What Are You Doing (The Rest of Your Life)?”

For the next segment Koz ventured into cinema themes and played “As Time Goes By” with piano coolly accenting. The evergreen song coincidentally was on the saxophonist/bandleader’s 2007 CD At The Movies produced by Phil Ramone. The saxophonist even sang “This Guy’s in Love You” and noted that the songwriter Herb Alpert approved him recording it and even played on it. Updating things to current times the saxophonist played grooving tune “Dr. Norm” dedicated to his dad and on his new CD A New Day.

McKnight returned to caressingly sing love songs “Forever,” his 1997 hit “The Only One For Me” and “You Are My Everything” dedicated to his wife of three years Leilani. Not stopping there, he continued with “Nobody” also inspired by his wife and falsetto-laden sad ballad “One Last Cry.”

Throughout the show Koz had a chat line going to poll the audience’s favorite love song. It was Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable,” resulting in a remarkable duet version by McKnight and Koz.

With full band the headliners served up fun groove “Summertime in New York City,” also from the new CD. Wrapping up the show was long-time Koz hit “You Make Me Smile” and the Jackson’s immortal hit “I’ll Be There.” It featured Shelea and Koz singing, with him taking a moment to ask the audience who he couldn’t see or hear to sing along. Douglas J. Cuomo’s Seven Limbs featuring Nels Cline and the Aizuri Quartet-Center For The Art of Performance at UCLA Royce Hall

Imaginative and boundless guitarist Nels Cline and the GRAMMY-nominated Aizuri Quartet consisting of Ayane Kozasa-viola, Karen Ouzounian-cello and violinists Miho Saegusa and Emma Frucht came together at the Center For The Art of Performance at UCLA’s Royce Hall for a virtual concert. They performed Douglas J. Cuomo’s Seven Limbs a work based on the Tibetan Buddhist practice of purification. From Aizuri’s standpoint it was entirely composed, while Cline worked off a basic framework that allowed him to freely improvise.

Dramatic, near-jarring playing from the string quartet quickly overtook the guitarist who initially created an airy and gentle setting. That soon shifted to a tranquil mode with guitar lightly accenting. The next sequence one of awakening alternated between a driving string quartet and raucous guitar, with them all intensely playing together briefly.

Calming quartet with guitar ensued and flourished afterwards with a slow violin crescendo that was intermittently intersected by attacking choruses from the other string players. Alternately, the next section included the strings with percussion generated by cello transcending into a lively almost jam-like section with Cline soloing profoundly and afterwards playing atmospherically with effects.

The guitarist also played acoustically, yet maintained his abstract edge, with the strings adding both colorful and atonal flavors. Cline, back on electric guitar injected maelstrom forays as the quartet supported with jolting choruses and brief peaceful interludes.

The aftermath and concluding moments of the concert encompassed willowing string passages and jaunting guitar to symbolize the ending and also beginning of a lifecycle. Cline and the Aizuri Quartet’s performance of Cuomo’s work was highly engaging and superbly enacted. For more info go to: https://cap.ucla.edu/

Joachim Cooder/Ry Cooder & Amythyst Kiah-Skirball’s Youtube channel

Not per se blue artists, Joachim Cooder/Ry Cooder & Amythyst Kiah have plenty of blues cred from their various projects and affiliations. Their talents were spotlighted by the Skirball Center’s Youtube channel and pre-recorded separately. The production was high quality and vividly captured the essence of the musicians.

The son and father Cooders, based in Los Angeles were showcased first in the Skirball’s amphitheatre and prerecorded, then interwoven with Kiah in her East Tennessee’s Johnson City apartment, also prerecorded. The Cooders consisting of Joachim vocals/amplified kalimba (Array imbarra) and Ry on banjo/mandolin played roots/blues songs. Kiah sang and played mostly electric guitar for folk and blues songs. Both musicians talked about their backgrounds, early music development and outlooks.

Cooder due to his highly regarded father who has worked with many blues, folk, traditional and international artists has been playing music since he was a baby. Additionally, his wife is also a musician and they toured together prior to having children. Kiah developed a little slower and was first exposed to her father’s vast music collection. She learned about British folk Celtic and West African music’s importance and influence on American music and how the music industry tried to keep them separate. Nonetheless, they often overlapped and created popular manifestations. Overall, between Cooder and Kiah there was a vast array of music knowledge displayed.

Cooder playing electric with effects was more indie folk and rock-like, but his father’s stellar banjo and mandolin playing kept everything in check for songs from his new Over That Road I’m Bound that encompassed both original compositions and modern takes on Uncle Dave Macon’s old-time country tunes. Some of the songs were  “Come Along Buddy,” “Heart Aching Blues,” “Molly Married a Traveling Man” and effects-driven rocking “Fuchsia Machu Picchu” and Delta/African “Morning Blues.”

On the other hand, Kiah showcased her affinity for Appalachian blue grass and folk, along with Delta blues. Her collaboration with Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, Allison Russell for new recording Songs of Our Native Daughters focused on Social Justice and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Clearly, not the topics the singer/songwriters had cover previously, but definitely of interest to her and welcomed. Among her selections were  Appalachian flavored  “Fire Water,” Pops Staples rangy strong guitar playing and strong singing “Opaque,” blues-rocking “Black Myself” and alt folk ballad “Wild Turkey.”

Skirball Stages: Joachim Cooder and Amythyst Kiah will be available to view on the Skirball’s YouTube channel following the premiere date. For more info go to: www.skirball.org, www.joachimcooder.com and www.amythystkiah.com

Artifacts Trio: ...and Then There’s This-REDCAT

Flautist/educator/bandleader Nicole Mitchell performed with her Artifacts Trio, which included Tomeka Reid-cello and Mike Reed-drums. The trio based in Chicago and formed in 2015 were Live Streamed by REDCAT in conjunction with Black History Month. The musicians have been longtime proponents of Chicago’s celebrated avant-garde scene and The Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM). Mitchell is presently the Williams S. Dietrich II Chair of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at University of Pittsburgh.

Notably, Mitchell has had an interesting connection with So Cal as well. From the age of eight she grew up in Anaheim and later studied music at UCSD for two years. Then she went east and earned degrees (BA & MA) in Illinois, afterwards she became an assistant professor and professor at UCI, along with being active in the So Cal jazz scene.

The flautist and her Chicago associates in performance created an exposition resembling elements of nature before advancing to pulsating rhythmic and thoroughly jazzy explorations. Mitchell soared with peppy cadences, and Roland Kirk-like tonality and ferocity extensively. Reed supplied scorching “in your face” drumming with a strong sense of tempo. Reid’s work on cello was bass oriented mostly, providing swinging and funky foundations for the other players, along with occasionally leading and soloing.

The trio’s other modes including a soulful ballad of sorts interspersed with bursts of energy, cello-driven classical/jazz nuances and modern classical/free jazz experimentation. Although, the trio is devoted to progressive and highly forward-thinking expression, their music for this event was accessible and very appealing. Mark Winkler and David Benoit CD Release Concert-Vitello’s

Chart-topping lyrist/singer Mark Winkler and GRAMMY-nominated pianist/composer David Benoit have known each other almost 40 years. But strangely, the artists never did a duet recording together. Benoit, however, was a session player for a couple of songs on the singer’s initial projects and produced Ebony Rain for him in 1987. They came together for OLD FRIENDS, due to COVID-19 and unforeseen circumstances. Consequently, both had plenty of idle time. After dinner at the pianist’s home they started doing songs together, and following “The Shadow of Your Smile,” Benoit suggested they do a project together.

Nearly a year later their efforts came to fruition and the final product with 13 meaningful songs, with many personal connections is finally out. Winkler and Benoit’s CD release show, in keeping with the abnormal times was a virtual concert at Feinstiens at Vittello’s.

Gabe Davis-bass, Clayton Cameron-drums, Pat Kelly-guitar were the backing players and also on the sessions for the recording. They got things underway with Bob Dorough’s immortal “Better Than Anything” with Winkler coolly inserting adlib situational lyrics and flying high as the band coolly flowed along. Deeper in the show the composer’s “I Got Just About Everything was also performed with the same gusto.

Going in a different direction for most of show were duets by the principal performers with evocative singing and stirring playing. Among them were Dave Frishberg’s “Sweet Kentucky Ham,” Henry Mancini’s “Two For The One” and Johnny Mandell/Richard Bennett’s “I Wish I’d Met You.” Even more emotion came from the title track written by Paul Simon with an Erik Satie interlude (with bass) and Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” that a story about Winkler stumping the Tonight Show Orchestra and getting to meet the songwriter. Not to be forgotten and in the same category was “Thirty Years.” It implemented the melody of Benoit’s instrumental “Saying Goodbye” with lyrics by Winkler and Heather Franks one of his students as homage to recently departed JazzTimes writer Christopher Loudon.

Equally relaxed and with the full band was Mandell’s “The Shadow of Your Smile” and Peter Allen/David Foster’s “When This Love Affair is Over,” bossa instrumental “Chega de Saudade” (not on the CD) that was tastefully garnered by piano, guitar and drums. Going full circle Winkler showcased touching lyrics he wrote for Benoit’s signature song “In a Quiet Place (Kei’s Song)” that only took 30 years to conceive. Closing out the memorable concert was Leonard Bernstein’s “Some Other Time,” who Benoit actually met and hung out with. For more info go to: Markwinklermusic.com and feinsteinsatvitellos.com.

JAZZ BUSINESS

Save CATALINA JAZZ CLUB amid COVID-19!

In response to the citywide closures, the Catalina Jazz Club has set up this digital tip jar in our fight to survive. Their doors have been closed since March 14th, and each day the fight grows harder to pay faithful staff, the talented tech crew and consummate chefs what they’re worth — which is everything. But there are some blues you just can’t sing away, so they humbly ask that you contribute whatever you can to help cover the rent of our Sunset hot spot and spare us from having to go dark for good. While great music can soothe the soul, it’s your gracious donation, no matter the size, that fills their heart.

Please contribute at GoFundMe.com/SaveCatalinaJazzClub
They’ll be sure to have your table ready.
All their love,
Catalina, Manny, and the Staff

JAZZ CLUB BIRDLAND

Even a small donation could help Tom D’Angora, who is leading the effort for Birdland, reach their fundraising goal. And if you can’t make a donation, it would be great if you could share the fundraiser to help spread the word.
